In June, Exposed 2008 came to Leith with a show of award winning photography from graduates of Edinburgh's Stevenson College Photography Department. In its second year at the ever-blooming Blue Drill Hall, the exhibition took in the best of work from a range of interests and genres, to provide the viewer with a unique experience of the best emerging talent in Scottish photography. The Blue Drill Hall has developed into a superb venue for the local arts and crafts community in Leith to develop and showcase their work, and working closely with Stevenson College, it is the perfect venue for exhibitions of a visual nature. The hall is large and high with a glass roof open to daylight, that helps give the framed images on display a full chance at appreciation. Every kind of photographic interest seems to have been covered by the students, from portraiture to landscape, abstract to nude, and sports to commercial. There were around 30 photographers on display at the event, and with the help of Edinburgh-based professional photographer, Gail Galbraith, we have tried to narrow those on display to a small number of well deserved mentions. Memorable mentions from this unqualified writer go to Peter Clarke and his wonderful wildlife imagery, as well as a series of superbly entertaining portraits from Scott Loudon. Richard Nettleton captured a witty photograph combining a builder's bum and "the world's thinnest notebook", while Claire Cox, two times winner of the First Scotrail Press Awards (Student Category) in 2007 and 2008, stood out with her consistently thought provoking and wonderfully captured shots, especially the photograph of the cheeky dog biting at a pedestrian's ankle. Asked to select the three top photographers from the exhibition, Gail selected Holly McIntosh, Patricia Runda, and Michele D'Elica, although when pressed, was unable to decide who would rank as number one, if any. "They all have that extra something," explained Gail. "Thought provoking, creative, and brilliantly executed - you can tell there has been a huge amount of thought, love and care gone into them. I love them all." Related Links www.outoftheblue.org.uk www.stevenson.ac.uk www.gailgalbraith.co.uk |
